What Exterior French Drain Systems Do

An exterior French drain is installed around the outside of your home's foundation — at the base of the foundation wall, below grade. Its job is to intercept groundwater and rain-saturated surface water before it builds up against your foundation and finds its way inside.

Unlike interior systems that manage water after it enters, exterior drains stop water at the source. When water moves through the soil toward your home, it encounters the gravel-filled trench and perforated pipe, which collects it and diverts it safely away from your foundation.

How Exterior French Drain Installation Works

Exterior drain installation is a significant undertaking that requires experienced contractors with the right equipment. Here's what the process involves:

1. Excavation to Foundation Footing: The soil around the exterior of your home is excavated all the way down to the bottom of the foundation footing — typically 6–10 feet deep for a full basement. This is the most labor-intensive part of the job.
2. Foundation Inspection and Waterproofing: With the foundation exposed, contractors inspect the wall for cracks and apply a waterproofing membrane or tar coating to create a water-resistant barrier.
3. Drain Board Installation: A dimple mat (drainage board) is often installed against the foundation wall to create an air gap that allows water to flow freely down to the drain without saturating the wall.
4. Gravel Bed and Perforated Pipe: A gravel layer is laid at the base of the excavation. A 4-inch or 6-inch perforated pipe is placed on the gravel to collect water at the footing level where it's most concentrated.
5. Filter Fabric Wrapping: The entire assembly is wrapped in geotextile filter fabric to prevent soil from migrating into and clogging the system.
6. Backfill and Restoration: The excavation is carefully backfilled with a mix of gravel and clean soil, and the yard surface is restored. This may include sod, seed, or landscaping replacement.
